Everyone, please help me fill out the list of supported and un-supported video cards by reporting your video card and whether or not the map editor works on your video card (if it's not already listed). Just reply to this message with your info. To get your video info/name, right-click on your desktop and select "Properties", switch to the "Settings" tab and click "Advanced", then look at the "Adapter" tab. If SGDK2 is failing on your video card, please also note the driver you are using, then try visiting the web site for your video card's manufacturer and downloading the most current driver. After the most current driver is installed, report your results before and after updating the driver so that I can also provide detailed info about which drivers do and do not work for particular cards. Here's the complete list, which I will edit as I get more info:
SGDK 2.0:
Supported:
- ATI Radeon Xpress (CATALYST driver 07.8)

- Intel 810e
- RIVA TNT2
- SiS 630/730
- 3Dfx Voodoo 5
SGDK 2.1
SGDK2.1 has been tested on a number of video cards. From this you can probably draw conclusions about many other cards, but I will just list the specific individual cards. In most cases, the whole series of similar cards probably behave about the same.
Tested successfully on:
- ATI Radeon HD3850
- ATI Radeon HD4870
- ATI Radeon HD4890
- ATI Radeon HD5770
- ATI Radeon Xpress 1150
- ATI Radeon X1200

- NVIDIA GeForce 9500 PCI-E
- NVIDIA GeForce 9800gt
- NVIDIA Quadro FX 770M
- NVidia GeForce GTS250
- NVidia GeForce GTX275
Unsupported:
3Dfx Voodoo 5? (Has not been tested since the release of 2.1.9, which introduces better video support)
-
Radeon X800 Series supported
-
ATI Radeon Xpress series works, as long as you update your drivers... (the older drivers that came with my comp dont work)
-
Can you find the driver name/version info?
-
Well it seems to have different versions for different components of the driver.
Driver Packaging version- 8.401-070815m-052020c-ATI
CATALYST version- 07.8
Direct 3d version- 7.14.10.0517
Open GL version- 6.14.10.6747
-
I think it's the CATALYST version you'd need to worry about.
-
GEFORCE 6200 works.
-
GEFORCE 6200 works.
To be consistent, could you tell me the name exactly as it appears in the "Adapter" tab of the dialog that appears from the "Advanced" button of Display Properties->Settings? I suspect it starts with "NVIDIA".
-
NVIDIA GeForce 6200
-
Works fine on my NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GS. (both versions 1 and 2.) I have the newest drivers.
-
works fine on my nVidia Geforce FX 5900
-
... and also on my nVidia Geforce 6610 XL
-
the SiS 630/730 (05-23-2001) drivers for win98 dont work (no WHQL, something that microsoft signs to make sure that the drivers will be compatable. since DX9, they didnt sign drivers for Win98. same is true for the Intel 80810e drivers :()
-
Works fine on my Nvidia Geforce 7800 GT
-
You can add Geforce 6800 to that "supported" list. :)
-
I think I'm going to have to start the list over again for version 2.1, so I don't know if I want to put to much effort into maintaining it before that release.
-
I started a new section for SGDK 2.1 support.
-
where?
-
The first post of this very thread
-
thanks - i thought of a new section of the forums.
-
Might as well add mine...
2x GeForce9800GTX (768Mb Ram) in SLI
-

yikes! that powerful and it doesn't work? (either that, or i am REALLY behind on technology)
and you can add Voodoo5 too (windows 98/ME)
-
Nope, works wonderfully, add in 2x dual core AMD procs and 8Gb Ram it is quite fast. I HATE waiting on my workstation. The only trouble is that XP doesn't use the second proc ever. It just sits idle, unless I'm booted into Linux that is.

oh...my bad
-
OK, you both need to tell me whether your card worked, and which version(s) of SGDK2 you're talking about. :)
-
Oh, it worked. I assumed that this thread was for supported cards. So, the PNY built Nvidia Geforce9800GTX+ OC (overclocked) with 786 Mb Ram per card 2x cards) functions with SGDK1 and SDGK2 on WinXP SP3. I haven't tried SGDK2.1 on XP or in Ubuntu yet. I think there may be issues with the SLI on the cards. If I am not mistaken I don't believe OpenGL supports SLI fully.
The only issue with SGDK2 is framerate. It will spool out an unbelievable framerate in 1080p mode. However your brothers code makes that a moot point. Thanks Durnurd!
-
SGDK2.1 does have a built-in frame rate limiter as well, which helps, I'm sure.
There are a lot of hurdles to get over getting SGDK2.1 games to run in Ubuntu, but once you're over them, it's much easier the next time. Admittedly, you still have to recompile the projects after removing a few calls to Windows APIs dealing with Joysticks that Mono doesn't support.
-
3Dfx Voodoo 5 doesn't work for either 2.0 or 2.1
-
SmartBoy16, I'm having trouble locating details on what exactly the problem was on your system. You said the map editor didn't work, but I can't find any mention of exactly what error message or behavior you're getting.

one of the many things im still working on. ill check it out tonight when i get home.
-
here it is!
if you want to see your desktop look weird, take a screenshot and paste it onto paint and then save it as a GIF format
the first one, error2, is the one when you try to play a game for 2.1
the next one, map error, is the one when you go to the map editor
the last one is the text in the map error
-
A PNY built Geforce 9500 PCI-E with 512mb Ram works as well.
-
I'm not so interested any more in what works on SGDK 2.0 since 2.1 is what I hope people will be mostly caring about pretty soon. I'll have to get my latest set of updates wrapped up and posted soon, I guess.
-
Ah, to be more specific, the above mentioned cards work with SGDK2.1 in both Win XP and Ubuntu linux. There are some random crashes due to the SLI setup on the release 10 version of Ubuntu machine, but the stable release Ubuntu runs cleanly with SGDK2.1 on my older machine.
-
Wow, I didn't know anyone else (besides Durnurd) was running SGDK2 in Linux. How exactly does that work again? Do you run it in some sort of emulation/translation, or does the Mono framework know how to run it directly, or do you re-compile it for Mono?
-
So far it runs horribly! I have VMware installed and run in an emulation mode, but it is clunky.
-
Ah, well, VMWare would make it run a bit slowly. What you really mean then, is that it run under Windows under VMWare under Ubuntu. It can be made to run natively, but it currently requires recompiling after removing a few lines of code.
-
NVIDIA Quadro FX 770M works for both
-
NVIDIA GeForce 2 MX works fine.
-
You shouldn't really have to worry about this so much, any modern video card will support it just fine.
I've seen it running on ATI 3 and 4 series cards, Nvidia 8 and 9 series cards, and also Nvidia's new GTX*** series of cards.
-
A couple weeks ago someone was pointing out that a number of the developers that he was working were unable to run it, so it's not quite a foregone conclusion that it'll work. The project kind of fell apart before we had a chance to get more details about the developers' configurations, though.

What version of opengl does sgdk2 use? if it's 2.1 or higher, then intel intergrated won't work anymore.
-
It's safe to say that it operates for
NVidia GeForce 7xxx, 8xxx, 9xxx, GTxxxx
ATI Radeon HD3xxx, 4xxx, 5xxx
I've seen it running on one card from each of those series, and the cards in the series are identical, except for clock speeds, number of stream processors etc. They support the same opengl versions, directx versions, shader models etc.
The actual cards I've seen it running on are
ATI Radeon HD4870
ATI Radeon HD4890
ATI Radeon HD3850
ATI Radeon HD5770
NVidia GeForce 7600gt
NVidia GeForce 8600gt
NVidia GeForce 9800gt
NVidia GeForce GTS250
NVidia GeForce GTX275

It looks like it only requires 1.2 (that's what the code is checking for), but I'm not sure how to verify that's all it actually needs.

i have a problem :( my graffix card does not support SGDK2 and i have a higher end intel graffix card that can play most games of today
is there any way this could be fixed? i really want to use SGDK2
here's my entire specs...

-
How can you tell that it's not supported? What fails? Is there a message?
-
yeah i get an error messege saying i need to update my video drivers and also something about an invalidenum when i tried to load a sample already in SGDK2 folders
i'll send you an attachment to your email address of a screenshot since i don't know how to show it here ok:)
-
You've tried updating your video drivers, right?
-
I've had this problem before on laptops (InvalidEnum). I guess laptop video cards/drivers aren't so good with gaming... other games must go to a lot of work to make their games work on laptops. I'm not sure what to do about it.
Were you using the sample project template in the file menu, or loading some other sample project?
-
yes i opened a sample project that was already in the folder..im gona try updating all my drivers
-
I must not have been clear enough in my question, so let me try suggesting something else. Rather than opening a sample project, try creating a new project based on the sample project template. Of course updating your drivers is important too; I just want to make sure I understand exactly what you've tried.
-
it's ok thank you ;D i'll just start my own project and see where it goes from there..also i like the editors alot  and your turtorials really help out alot :educated:
-
Have you been able to get anything to run or use the map editor? If you can't get samples to work, spending time on a new project might be risky -- you'll find out after putting effort into the project that no projects will run on your system.
-
ATi Radeon 8500 works
-
Anyone who has had problems with video hardware/driver support should try again with SGDK 2.1.9 which offers better video support.
-
My 560gtx seems to work for the most part but in the map editor there is an issue where the tiles don't seem to refresh correctly. Does anyone else have this issue?
-
My Nvida 660m (laptop) graphics card seems to have some issues. It runs but it stutters. Even in the editor I notice the mouse will skip some.
-
Never seen this thread! Well I'm having screen flickering issues myself when I run my game, but I'm using some intel tablet with integrated graphics.
-
Does that apply to running the sample project too?
-
No, seems to be games where a large amount of layers are on screen.
Particularly my game and Vincent's work of art.
Strange how the flickers are constrained only to the Form window.
What about you, chanpod?
-
I don't know if anyone's still paying attention to this thread, but SGDK2.2.10.1 runs great on my desktop (OS: WIN-7 64, VIDCARD: AMD HD 7450 w/ latest driver PROCESSOR: 3.3 GHz AMD FX-6100 6-Core RAM: 16 GB) with one exception: when I make plans or edit maps with transparent tiles I get a LOT of artifacts. I attached a GIF screenshot in case anyone sees it and knows what the issue is.
Thanks!
