Title: Video Tuts
Post by: Tanja on 2008-01-21, 03:05:33 PM
btw, my chinese fellow student is very interested in sgdk. too bad she speaks a poor english. but video tuts would be very good in this case...
i for myself also like them better than long texts.

I work with a team in China at work; unfortunately, I don't think they would have the time to be translating my personal projects, and none of their Chinese has rubbed off on me.  I did send one developer a link to my site to look at in his free time, but he hasn't said much about it.  Surely there are enough people living in China that someone would have time to do the translation -- the trick is finding that person :).  (Or someone to make videos would also be good I suppose... I'm still working on OpenGL.)

i could ask her to write about sgdk2 in some chinese forums. maybe we can achieve something on this way.
but making videos would do the trick almost as good as a translation.

Here's a video tutorial I made last night for importing sprites:

Tutorial 5 (http://www.findmyed.com/files/SGDK2Tutorials/Tutorial5.htm)

There are some long instructions, which may display for awhile.  Just wait, they'll go away.

Some long notes also appear with a "Continue" button placed beneath.  These won't disappear until you click Continue.

hey durnurd, this tut is great! it is way better than your others.
this is a huge advantage for all people who can learn better from a visual help than text files. it will be helpful especially for foreign users with maybe not so good language skills.
why don't upload all your tuts at enigmadream? a link to them could be placed at every related tutorial help file.
maybe you could update your other tuts to be the same style like this one.
i like especially that it's a flash movie, so if the comments are displayed too short for some people, they can just pause it.

Oh, one thing I forgot to mention before to BlueMonk (though it has little to do with the video tutorials other than I remembered it while making):

Could the path be stripped from the "Recent Files" at the bottom of the file menu?  It makes the file menu unnecessarily wide, and people generally don't need to know where the file is specifically when opening it (usually they already know).

Well, if I recall correctly, the text of the menu item is used to locate the file, so it wouldn't be a straightforward change.  Also, I assume some people keep backup versions of their projects, in which case it's quite important to have the path there if they're keeping the backup in a different folder with the same name.

Does anybody else keep multiple versions of the same project on their system (with the same filename)?

I take my suggestion from programs like Microsoft Word.  For example, "C:\...\Architecture\ha2.doc" is in my list of recent word documents, along with "C:\...\unit two work.doc".  It seems to automatically abbreviate to a correct length.  The only problem would be storing the path somewhere, which would not necessarily be trivial, but straightforward enough.  It also makes the menu look nicer so there's less blank menu taking up space.

Tutorial 5 was cool! Where's 1,2,3 and 4?

What did ya use to make it?

I used a program called Captivate to create them.  I also created tutorial four as a video tutorial.  These tutorials are just videos of the tutorials already in the help documentation, which is why this is called number 5.  I also made the several different parts of tutorial 4, which you can see in this directory: http://www.findmyed.com/files/SGDK2Tutorials/
I separated them different video formats, and different levels of interactivity vs. video fluidity, to see which was the best overall.
There are no videos for tutorials 1, 2, or 3.

Whoa, no wonder those tuts look so good. I just looked up Captivate and I ended up at Adobe looking at a 600 dollar price tag! For a second there I was think about creating similar tuts as I learn the kit, but that's not gonna happen - at least not with Captivate.

SmartBoy: I did notice Captivate 3 runs on windows 2000, so you should be good. Just open up your cheque book and head on over to Adobe! 8)

Thanks for the toot durmurd, I always enjoy learning from videos better.

Or go to college where they have Captivate pre-installed on some computers ;)

i hope so. technically there is a difference between winMe and Win2k. even though win 2k was realeased first, WinMe's version is 4.9 (with win2k being 5.0)

Oh thanks for clearing that up for me. I wasn't using windows back then, and I was wondering about that as I was typing. "ME" was Millennium Edition right?

Hey, does anyone know of any free software for making video tuts? I know there a couple of free video screen capture rs out there, but I don't think you can edit in dialog and what not with those.

if you have xp, you could use windows movie maker (it should be either included, or you can download it from microsoft) then use the Print Screen button on the keyboard (next to scroll lock) to take a snapshot of the screen. open paint, Ctrl+V, save as bitmap (or jpg or png, whichever youy prefer). open WMM, drag pictures to WMM in correct order, add text (using paint) to describe steps, compile into avi (or whatever other format is used), post on youtube.

yes i know im cheap, but it works.

yes, ME stands for Millenium Edition, or as some people called it, "Mistake Edition". after using it for a while, many bugs really slow down the system, like in my case, i cannot use the help program that came with it. id use windows 98, but then i cannot play DVDs on my computer (and that is something i cannot live without).

Movie maker is fine for simple tutorials, but I wouldn't use screenshots.
I haven't tried any of this software but it should be a start. (http://www.google.com.au/search?q=free+screen+recording+software&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a)

Holly cow Jam! I'll admit it's been many years since I've looked around google for free screen recorders. That's a great list. Thanks! I feel like a fool for assuming, and not checking. Another one of my many blond moments that I'm having more and more of lately. Sleep is good! :tired:
