Title: Who knows where to download [censored]?
Post by: Lyagushkka on 2009-09-05, 05:50:24 AM
[Censored by BlueMonkMN]
I think everyone on this site dislikes spam and spam-related tools that disrupt normal and fair operation of email and web sites.  Allowing these practices to proceed by letting this kind of information to continue propagating would be irresponsible.  Although I allow almost any other kind of speech here, I will be very harsh on spam.  No tolerance for pure spam and even less for information on how to increase it. (Less than "no tolerance" is no tolerance with a scolding :).)

You wanted the English version, right? Here's the link I found;

[censored]

Rather expensive, what exactly is it used for?

"[censored] is the premier automated link-building tool. Through the use of this tool you will see a significant increase in the number of unique visitors to your site, as well as see your site jump in the search engine result pages."

I think it adds links to your webpage on a lot of different webpages, that's one of the ways google determines your pagerank in the results. Google will blacklist you though if it's too blatant... (most software like this is)

I don't know if anyone noticed, but why has the name been censored?

again, he does not want to encourage spamming here in the forums. there have been many recent "users" who have been spamming just for the attention or whatever reason they do. notice Lyagushkka's account doesn't exist anymore. I think we all should report suspicious like this if it happens again.

What other things should we be looking for? When a certain spam thread appeared recently, the user was later listed as doing 'unkown action'. Would that be a sign of foul play?

I don't know if there's one simple set of rules.  I just know that the tool mentioned above seemed bad and part of the source of all that is wrong with the internet... designed to post meaningless links just to increase a site's ranking beyond what it deserves... and the project listing got 20 submissions on Saturday that would have deleted all the projects due to a tool like that.  I definitely want to do everything I can to stamp out that kind of activity.

i've noticed that some of these who post "Spam" posts have an invalid or meaningless ICQ number and their personal website points out to some weird website such as a russian dating service, or even their own profile page. check out some of our "new" users once in a while, make sure they seem legit.

Speaking of which, i wonder if we should have a "Welcome to the Forums" thread so that new users can post to this thread and tell more about themselves. This way, we can rule out the bad users from the good users more easily. :D

I just noticed that I was 4 versions behind on updating SMF.  Maybe the update will improve the problem be being smarter about user registration somehow.  Don't know what's new in the past 4 versions of SMF.  But it's up-to-date now.

That sounds like a good idea!  :educated:

How will we know when it's updated, not counting the possibility if there is a change in looks.

you won't... forum updates are generally invisible to the end user.

It looks like at the very bottom of the page it says "Powered By SMF 1.1.10".  Before I think it was 1.1.6.
