Title: OBLIVION GOLD!!!!11
Post by: hebedaymun on 2006-03-04, 08:51:47 PM
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion went gold a few days ago!!!  Is anyone here ready for it?  I was ready for it back in 2004!!!

Did everyone pay off their preorders?  I did, I forked over 80 bucks for my collectors edition.  Now, it's time for the longest 17 days of my life.

Anyone else interested in this?  maybe for PC?  I got mine for Xbox 360.

*looks around at everybody* ???

I know nothing about the game, so no, I did not pay off any pre-orders for it.  As for the collector's edition... I bought the Collector's Edition of one game once, and it wasn't anything interesting at all.  The extra content wasn't worth it, and all the stuff that you can show off I never showed off.  IMHO, it's just a waste of money.  But then, I've never played Elder Scrolls nor do I know what it's about, so perhaps this is incredibly different?

Yeah, oblivion looks pretty cool. I like the elder scrolls III, so i'll probably get the new one.

Okay.... that's nice for you, and yes this collectors edition is way more ambitious then that collectors edition you purchased.  At least, I'm pretty sure of it.

Elder Scrolls games are all about huge 16 square miles of free roaming gameplay.  It's one of the best western RPG series.  Go read about it, play the Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, and enjoy it.  You can't hate it.

...one more thing...is anybody following the stuff that's going on with ILoveBees2.com?  I sure am.  It's down right creepy.

There's a reason to avoid reading about new technology before it's released.  If you just read about stuff that's already out, then you won't have any time to wait between when you find out about a game and when it's available :).  'Course it's really hard not to find out about new games before they come out.  And here I am stuck with a half-functional PS2 and there's no way I could avoid finding out about the PS3, and it's soo long before that becomes available.  I wonder if I'll have to buy another PS2 in order to play DVD movies and some of the less-reliable PS2 games before the PS3 becomes available  :-\.
Title: Re: OBLIVION GOLD!!!!11
Post by: hebedaymun on 2006-03-06, 05:13:34 PM
I don't think the PS3 will be out this year....so you have a terribly long time to wait.

Why the heck wont you get an Xbox 360?  It's probably going to have really great games on it. (Even Final Fantasy)

To stay on topic (I don't care if it's an off-topic topic, you still have to stay on topic: It's just polite, i suppose)

I CAN"T WAIT FOR OBLIVION!!!!!!

RRRRRRROOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!

P.S.  You can count on selling all of your valuables in order to afford a damn POS3! ;D

I read the article stating that it would be delayed until next year and cost $900 or something.  However, even in that article, it stated that the price would drop to around $300 a few years later (mostly due to the cost of Blu-Ray technology).

However, Sony officially stated that the article was based on unfounded information, and that it was still slated for later this year (October, I believe) and would cost much less than the Meryl Lynch article stated.

So I guess we can only wait and see.

Maybe I will have to go for an XBOX 360, though I hear that's quite a mess too, with their rush to release.  I've always wanted to play Munch's Oddysey.  And what would I do with all my PS/PS2 games?  You want 'em durnurd?  ('course I'd have to finish playing We (heart) Katamari first.)  I suppose I could hold on to them until the PS3 is available, but I'd rather just have one game console.  Maybe by the time the PS3 becomes reasonably priced, the XBOX 360 will be wearing out and I can give that away too :).

Post by: durnurd on 2006-03-07, 08:15:16 AM
Well, good luck finding a 360.  The only ones I've seen in stores are display models.  But maybe that's changed.  Also, Munch's Odyssey is not on the backwards compatibility list (http://www.xbox.com/en-US/games/backwardcompatibilitygameslist.htm) for the 360.
Title: Re: OBLIVION GOLD!!!!11
Post by: hebedaymun on 2006-03-07, 09:12:32 AM
Durnurd's right, it's not on the list for backwards compatibility.

Durnurd is wrong, however, because the shortage is being fixed this month, and all the bugs are being worked out with these new ones coming into stores.  So uhhhh.... yeah, you should get one.

Oh, and yes, the new technology will be 'outdated' (you know how technology goes) in a few years, so they'll drop the price of that thing.  Go for 360 and enjoy gaming until that thing comes out ---or until that darn Revolution comes out.  Damnit, I can't wait for that too.
Title: Re: OBLIVION GOLD!!!!11
Post by: durnurd on 2006-03-07, 10:30:40 AM
It will certainly be interesting to see what kind of games are developed for the Revolution with that controller.  And I heard that the price would be the lowest of the next-gen consoles.

And it's not that Blu-Ray drives will be out-dated in a few years, rather they will be in greater usage.  They're just entering the mass market.  Like DVD drives used to be vomitously expensive, but are now $30, and they aren't "out-dated" yet.  I suspect similar things will happen with the blu-ray drives.

Hmmm...yeah, that's what I meant.  Sorry if it didn't come out right.

I am so damn excited about the Revolution!!!  I really can't wait to see Nintendo get creative.  When they get creative, good games are created.

bUT STAY ON TOPIC!

OBLIVION is going to be fantastic.  I just looked at some leaked scans of it from a magazine, and it looks awesome.  Oh, if you want to know what it got in a reveiw---it got a 9.5.

That does look awesome though.

Title: Re: OBLIVION GOLD!!!!11

I don't know how what I said could be taken offensively, but what you said has definetely gone too far now.  I was simply pointing out that I noticed some jagged edges in the graphics, specifically around the trunks of the trees that, if they were removed via anti-aliasing, it would look like an astounding game.  I said absolutely nothing about the size of the game, and yes, I do know what 16 square miles of an ingame world is (same size as the original Star Wars Galaxies planets, and I trekked across the entirety of Naboo on my first day of playing that game on foot.  So yes, I do know).  I never said I've never heard of Oblivion, I never said I've not played Morrowind, and I never said I didn't appreciate the graphics of the game.  I said that it could be better with Anti-aliasing.  With that being said, your actions were unprovoked, unwarranted and have been extremely offensive to me.  You insulted me, you insulted my intelligence, and you implied that I am a stupid little kid who doesn't know anything, and I find that incredibly offensive.  You are taking to protecting the reputation of this game too far, to the extent that you see any perceived (even if non-existant) criticism of the game as a personal attack on you, and you personally attacked me back, even though I was simply stating that it "could be better".  As it stands, it does look like an incredibly detailed game with amazing graphics.  I should know, I've played my fair share of highly-detailed games, including Doom III, Half-Life II, and others, which both have Anti-Aliasing, which removes the problem seen in the picture you posted above.  Perhaps you should do some research yourself before making an unfounded rebuttal.

I think I tend to be pretty relaxed about letting people post what they want, and I am almost tempted to do no moderation whatsoever (just let people post appropriate replies to inflammatory posts), but when posts like that show up in a community like this, I worry that it will turn people away not only from the game you're trying to praise but from the forums.  So I think the only responsible thing (for me) to do is to tone down the posts that go too far so that other members see that this is a mostly friendly community that does have some reasonable limits.  If that kind of censorship sends a worse message, someone let me know.

Censoring yourself by starring out a single letter or reducing intensity of your swearing doesn't do much good to moderate the effect of attacking another person.  I think everyone knows what you're saying with the starred out letters, and the swearing itself isn't usually the main problem, but rather the fact that you're using it to "attack" someone personally.  I think the Germans offer a good perspective on this -- they don't mind swearing like Americans do (they probably don't censor television just based on words) but calling a person a name (especially an animal name) is just as bad or worse.  So keep in mind that, at least in the opinion of this board's moderator (me), personal insults are worse than swearing, and I can tell the difference between swearing in general or swearing at someone.  So expect consequences if you go over the line in that regard.

A final suggestion for effective communication: if you disagree with someone, focus on the positive rather than the negative side of the argument.  Instead of insulting their intelligence and telling them what's wrong about them, tell them more about what you think is right and why you disagree.  This accomplishes two things: 1) The person you are trying to communicate with will be more open to hearing your perspective and 2) You are more likely to clear up any misunderstandings before making a fool of yourself.  I don't have a degree in communication or anything, but to me, it's just common sense.  I hope others see the sense in that perspective.

Look, Durnurd, there's no reason to get offended by my comments.  In fact they should be excused.  I was acting like a silly blinded fanboy and I admit that.... so, yeah I take it back.  Now that it's censored...I really don't remember what it is that i said.... sorry for being a sh*t head, Durnurd.  I take back all those comments.  I hope I don't discourage people from these forums, and if I do...well, why the hell would they let that get to them???  also, yes, I do know what AA is, I always look for it in my games, it's just the developers had to sacrifice alot of graphics to have a massive world with over 200+ hours of gameplay, 200+ doungeons, 1000+ items, etc.  Yeah...so I guess you can have this....

*Gives him a piece of cake*

So.... uhh....yeah, Oblivion....woot.

I can't decide whether I want this game or Galactic Civ 2, since I probably won't have time to play both.  Really, I shouldn't get either so I have more time to work on making games.

Cbass, let me introduce you to this site...

http://www.srtest.com/referrer/srtest (http://www.srtest.com/referrer/srtest)

Go to the site and select 'Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion' in the drop-down box.  It'll tell you what you need to run it, all the system requirements and such.

EDIT: Also, I know what you mean about deciding.  I hope I don't lose my job when this game comes out!!!

EDITAGIAN: The website scans your computer to see if you're capable of running it, and gives you a grade accordingly.  It's really handy.  Check it out!!

The magazine was called Stuff Gamer/Magazine.  Anyone heard of it?  No matter, it pissed me the F off!!

On a lighter note, OXM gave Oblivion a 9.5, a swedish magazine gave it a 10/10 and PC Gamer gave it a 93%(9.3).

I'd say it's doing pretty damn good. ;D

WHAT THE HELL!!???

That stupid magazine gave OBLIVION a 6/10!!!!!!!!!!! >:( >:(

I hate to bring up a dead topic, but honostly, this is pretty close to whave I gave Oblivion (I have it a 7.7 with my little review system).

It's fun and all and has really pretty graphics, but there are A LOT of blaring problems.  Just to list a few...
Anygame that gets that bad of FPS is sloppy and just doesn't deserve that high of a rating.  Yes, when I'm standing still in a building with maybe 1 person walking around, I get fine frames per second, otherwise, everything is just really choppy.  When I'm walking in the world, it starts to just get terrible, and anytime I'm fighting a small group of people and one of them is casting magic, I might as well just get out the sword and randomly swinging because that's about the only thing I can do.  When the FPS constantly gets so bad that during battle I can't use my bow or magic, that just isn't fun.
I don't really mind a few bugs and completely understand having a few bugs, but Oblivion has more than a few bugs and it just takes away from the whole game experience.  To make things worse on top of all the bugs, it even has a memory leak just to make my FPS even worse than it already is.
Honostly, I could make better AI in Scrolling Game Dev (no offense Ben).  When there are two enemies standing next to each other and one mysteriously falls down, I would hope his buddy would have the common sense to check things out, but nope, that doesn't happen in Oblivion world.  I would even like it if the enemy bothered to use basic tactics when fighting you rather than standing in front of you and swinging and moving back every now and then.  Oblivion seriously dropped the ball on the AI, if they had the AI of F.E.A.R., I could probably ignore most of the other problems and be happy.
The leveling system in Oblivion is just asinine.  If you don't plan your character from the first step you take, you're screwed.  Yes, this is probably just a personal dislike, but any system where if you don't know exactly how the sytem works and know exactly what you want your character to be from your first step you get a character that can't beat the game on hard is just silly.
First off, let us change the sensitivity on the mouse settings for the menu! (not the game which it does, but for the menus)  After that, since the game was made for the XBox 360, the item screen is just stupid.  You can only see about 5 items at a time and you have a horribly long list of crap to go through that is poorly sorted.  Then there's the map.  Why must it be so small!?  I know there's a spot I have to go to in whatever town, but it takes me forever to find it because I'm spending most of my time scrolling around the redicuously small map to find it.  I could go on with the menu and UI problems, but it just isn't worth it.
This is probably another personal thing, but I hate the horses.  They're not that much faster, the die easily, and I'm the one that often kills the stupid thing because it gets in the middle of battle and enemies tend to go for the horse before they go for me.  Oh, and the whole paying for the official mod releases is just silly (especially the horse one because, well, the horses suck).
I don't think they could have made this thing more user unfriendly if they tried.  A horrible interface, very akward and clumsy controls, not being able to rotate pieces (so it's essentially just tile based), and only supports up to Max 4.x, yeah, that's my idea of a good editor.  I was hoping to get a good chance to play around with the editor over break, but it's just honostly a horrible editor.  About the only plus to it is that the scripting isn't bad.  Other than that, it's just a bad editor.

All in all, the game was just poorly made.  All the attention seemed to placed on the really pretty graphics and adding a lot of quests and then everything else was just thrown in.  Don't get me wrong, I love the graphics and appreciate the large amounts of quests, but all the other problems of the game just completely outweigh the good parts and Oblivion really shouldn't have gotten as high of scores as it did.

My opinion on oblivion:

FPS: I bought it for computer, and well...I have to agree with you. I get a pretty bad FPS rate.

Bugs: In my playing of the game I haven't found too many.

AI: While the combat AI could be vastly improved, I think that the 'radiant AI' used by characters is pretty cool, and makes the world of Oblivion seem more realistic.

Leveling: I don't think there's anything wrong with Oblivion's leveling system, but thats just my opinion.

UI: I have to disagree, I think that the UI is fairly easy to navigate and use. At the least, its a huge improvement over the UI in Morrowind.
