is there a chance this forum could get a chat room type thing?  like on gamedev.org?
or maybe a irc chat thing?

I suppose that'd be mostly up to Pr0c since he handles most of the hosting issues.  I don't know if simple machines forum has a way to "plug-in" a chat system or if that's something that'd work well in his hosting environment.  I'm open to it, but I don't have any particular need to see an integrated chat system.  I figure people who are interested in chat will use the chat icons associated with the profile (like the MSN Messenger icon) and just use one of those to chat.

You just follow the straightforward steps and you get a customized chatroom HTML code to paste into your website. I have one on my site and it's alright no smiley's or advanced features but pretty good seeing your getting it for free.   ;)  The problem is I've only ever seen one person on my chatroom.   :(
