Title: TileStudio
Post by: sam on 2006-04-09, 01:03:11 PM
Does anyone have TileStudio? tilestudio.sourceforge.net (http://tilestudio.sourceforge.net)
I downloaded it the other day.
It's pretty nice, It's got a really nice graphics editor and good map editor (I like SGDK's better though).
If anyone has it do you know if you can save the whole tileset as a bitmap?
I know you can save each individual tile as a bitmap but that takes way too long.
I've just been making the tileset, taking a screenshot of the window, pasting it in Paint and editing out the tileset. Any easier way? ???

I posted a link to TileStudio several months ago.  Yes, I have it.  It is pretty interesting and nice if you're good at graphics.  Which I'm not.  So I don't use it much.  At all, in fact.  It just sits there growing dust in my Graphics submenu.

As for exporting the graphics in one image, try using the "Export Tiles" option from the File menu (Shift+F4)

Actually, the reason I like it is because it has so many good tools that make it a lot easier to draw tiles if you're not too good at graphics (which I'm not). But then again maybe I'm just comparing it to the SGDK graphics editor (which I've always used for all the games I've done). It's got good tools that make it easy to draw grass, dirt, trees, clouds, all kinds of stuff. I guess the thing I like most about it is the lighting feature and the random fill feature. If it didn't have those I would probably just get rid of it.

Thanks.

Here's a couple screenshots of my game.
I've made all the graphics (except for the player sprite, which i made a long time ago with the SGDK graphics editor) with TileStudio. I've flipped/rotated objects with the SGDK graphics editor.
I know the graphics aren't extremely detailed or anything but I don't plan on changing them.

EDIT: The background music for this game is extremely addicting...(Green Sleeves)

I downloaded the program to see how good it really is. I haven't done much aside from just the tutorial, but wow! I was amazed! Random fill, lighting, choosing multiple colors at once... It's some good stuff. I've already introduced my friend Adam to it (the guy who's doing graphics for the next game) and he agrees. Thanks for pointing this program out!

What tutorial did you do ?(I cant remember if theres more than 1 or not). I did one with an egg an apple and some other cool stuff. It is a really nice program, you can make decent looking grass in 3 seconds. :)

There was one on the website. Showed how to make grass, trees, and paths. And yeah, the speed of making high quality stuff like grass and water is what's really making this worthwhile.

I assume, based on screenshots, Tile Studio supports alpha blending so that the graphics can be saved with an alpha "channel" (hopefully in PNG format) which will allow partial transparency over different backgrounds at runtime.  Are there any relatively simple features found in Tile Studio that you think should be included in the SGDK2 graphics editor?  It'd be great if Tile Studio's output were easily portable to SGDK2 so that I can recommend it as an alternative to SGDK2's graphics editor.  It'd be nice if I could directly integrate it, with it being open source and all, but it appears to be written in Pascal of all languages!  But maybe some higher-level integration is possible... of course SGDK2 will be able to import graphics from external sources.  Maybe that's enough... or maybe I should parse some more of Tile Studio's file formats... looks like it can create maps too.

It appears that it supports transparency only in the way SGDK 1 did.  That is, you can specify a transparent color when exporting, or use the default during creation, but you can't do alpha blending.

However, it is possible to export the map.  I'm not sure of the format of course, but it shouldn't be too hard to figure out with the help files.

I don't know about alpha channel but some of the key features that make it good are: lighting. There us a little box with a circle in it, the circle represents the light source, you can move the circle around to control where the light is coming from in your tile. Random fill, you can make (usually) seamless grass, desert, water, dirt very quickly. On the pallette you can select more than one color at once, then when you do random fill it will use all the colors you selected and randomly make a texture with smootheed edges between colors. Also the more than one color select can be used to make standing-outish rectangles, eclipses and other things. It puts the darkest colors around the edges and uses the other colors until the lightest color is on the inside. Unlimited undos while you're working on one tile. 1 word, awesome. Hope that helps. One more thing, I don't know if Im the only one but in the new SGDK2 graphics editor the white and gray diamond background always screws me up when I have to do some erasing. Not the tile, my mind gets screwed up I think it would be better with just a plain white bg. Or can this already be done?

I think that's to distinguish between something that's actually white and something that's transparent. At least, that's how Adobe did it with Photoshop.
