Title: Concept art & character sketches
Post by: Orion Pax on 2006-04-21, 04:16:01 PM
Do you sketch out concept art before commiting to your final game art? If so post it here =]

For modern 3d games its pretty much essential. You can get away without doing much, if any concept art for some simplistic 2d games. However it may have played a bigger part in your favorite title than you realize. The goal of concept art is to show the possibilites, personalities, environments, etc before commiting to actual game art and code. In a commerical setting it may be what gets you the green light to futher pursue the project. Anyway I thought it might be a good topic for this forum. So please share your Ideas and concepts =]  I don't care if you think it seems crude, rough, etc.... post it anyway. Just try to visualize various portions of the games you intend to build.

I'm attaching a character sketch. I doubt I'll be using it for a game but the same principals apply. Had it been intended for a 3d game I would have also added a front and back view (for 3d modeling the charactor).

Since it's been a while since I've given any update on our latest project, I've decided I'd post some of our concept art. It's been a bit difficult, getting my ideas across to my teammate since we haven't seen each other for two months, but luckily I have a camera and Photoshop (wish I had a scanner... :().

I'm having some trouble getting the images to attach (it says it's taking too long or exceeding the server limit (which it isn't)) so I posted these through the magic of free image uploads here (http://eric77777.blogspot.com/2006/07/concept-art.html).

The first one is what our main character looks like. There's going to be a whole society of these agrarian tunnel-digging furry guys. Not sure what we're going to call them yet. And there he is with his spear. Adam told me he used to draw these guys in his spare time, so that's where the idea came from. He did a great job putting into pixelized form (but you won't see that until we post a demo).

The second is our concept for one of those multi-functional items. It's a shield that's WAY too heavy for him. I think it'll be some kind of high-tech shield that just materializes (how else would he carry it around everywhere?). We also decided he could use it as a sled eventually. Look at 'em go! That's the best "snowy mountain" I can draw... that's why he's on graphics and I'm not ;).

And anyone know what's up with the image attachment thing?

I do more artwork for a game than I usually do actual creating. :P
