General Discussion / Re: 3D Models Instead of Sprites

i would bet that in order to add any 3-d effects to SGDK, a complete rebuild of the engine would need to occur.

Although, this would be a great idea for SGDK3, right?

Yes, I decided I wanted to use SGDK1 because I know that better than SGDK2. I kinda feel bad that I have put this off for so long, so I want it to get done quickly. Maybe when I get a little more time, I'll port this game to SGDK2 or XBLA.

Yes, I am back! I've been pretty much caught up with a lot of homework, so I haven't been able to do too much, but I have finally decided to go ahead and restart on my game after a year-long hiatus.

I'm planning on doing a few changes to the way I will work on this.

  • Starting about June, 1, I get a 2 week break from college, so this will give me some time to start on the project.
  • After that, I will try my best to update every two weeks.
  • I will be writing all 4 levels out on paper first before doing any work on the computer. I also reduced the number of levels so I can finish it faster. (They still will be in 2 parts and the Boss)
  • I am also completely redesigning Basic3D for easier level editing. The current one requires 3 layers to work and it takes waaay too much time to edit and switching layers is a pain, even with the script. The new model will only need 1 layer. It will also be easier to change the design.

I want to be able to finish this in at my own pace, so I won't set a release date...yet. Hopefully I can get it done before I graduate (for my portfolio).

I'll keep posting as I get stuff done!

Off-Topic / My Future
« on: 2010-05-05, 07:04:33 AM »
Hey you all. I just want to let you know of what my plans are for the future.

After a whole year's hiatus I'll start working on RANAT again starting in June. I have yet to decide whether it will be on SGDK 1 or 2. (most likely 1, since it is already 1/2 way done there). I am expecting a lot of college homework, so I'll try my best to work on it weekends and update once every month. I'm going to take my time on this one and finish it when it gets done. Expect this (or not) to be released Q1 2012.

I have started a YouTube channel exclusively for uploading my gaming videos. Here I will upload some of my updates as well as some college projects like Unreal Levels. It is http://youtube.com/MidnightMascott

My other projects, 2wenty Dungeons and Codename: Midnight, are projects I want to work on once I finish College. I have not decided if they will be on SGDK or not.

But other than that, I probably won't be visiting very much (although nothing much is happening right now).

So until my next update,
SmartBoy16

Help, Errors, FAQ / Re: lava, water and spikes help
« on: 2010-03-30, 02:21:25 PM »
could you post the .sgdk2 file? you can save attachments to posts under the advanced options or you can upload it to an online folder such as box.net

there are a few ways of doing this depending on how you set up your game. the common way is:

1. Make a 2 point path at the location of the pit to create a rectangle.
2. Make a 1 point path at the beginning where you want the player to return to.
You can use Shift+T to make the path snap to tile locations

3. Create these rules on the pit path in the rules editor:
     a. If IsSpriteWithin
Sprite: (whatever the name of your player sprite is)
          RelativePosition: CenterMiddle
     b. Do TransportToPlan
Sprite: (whatever the name of your player sprite is)
Path: (whatever the name of your beginning path is)
          Alignment: CenterMiddle
          Make sure "EndIf/EndWhile" is checked

if you need any more help, let us know ;)

Have any of you guys heard of this? It's a free development kit using the game engine from Unreal Tournament 3. So far I've been using it for about a week now and I think it's great!

You can actually rate the game on the project listing site (can't you?).

Off-Topic / What should I work on?
« on: 2010-03-20, 11:44:46 PM »
As many of you have noticed, I have been going back and forth between projects for about a whole year now. Since I have started college, I have had little time to work on any of these games. I would like to know what I should work on next. And I promise (and i am 99% sure) that I will stick to that game until the very end!  ;)

For sure, I am going to use SGDK2 to develop these. and there is a chance that I might enter this game to the 13th Independent Games Festival.

I just want to give a quick background of each game

Codename: Midnight
* I have the basic engine finished
* I will upgrade the graphics and add more tools
* I am still deciding if I should add a "story" element to this

2wenty Dungeons
* I know how to start the game and have 4 playable characters planned
* The battle system needs a lot of tinkering
* I still need to decide on an ending

The RANAT Foundation
* The game is 1/2 finished on SGDK1
* I have the whole story finished
* I already started working on a test sprite in SGDK2

I'll work on this game as much as I can and get it finished by March/April 2012 when I graduate.
