General Discussion / Re: FMod features in SGDK2

Servicerci, that comment doesn't make any sense. Can you prove that you're not a bot before I delete your account?

I was able to run from the installer. but I had already installed GameDev (SGDK 1) which may have impacted how it worked.

If you like I can also post similar information on the Scrolling Game Development Kit Facebook page. Or (if you have the ability to post there) you could post there yourself; just make sure to note that it's a version 1 project.

Hm. By default it was running at about 1 FPS. Then I switched the mode to 32 bits per pixel and it runs at 60 FPS - much better. I only had time to play it for a couple seconds, but it works! Have you ever considered using the install packager to distribute it more easily to people who don't have SGDK? I re-installed SGDK 1 just to check this out, so I might be able to run through the install packager if you aren't set up for it.

Great story, thanks for sharing how SGDK inspired you! Have you tried submitting the game at http://sgdk2.enigmadream.com/index.php/projects? Sorry, I can't remember if I left that site in a state where submissions are accepted, and, as the admin, it's hard for me to view the site as a normal user.

Edit: I see you posted in the SGDK 1 forum implying that your project is not for SGDK2. In that case, I'm afraid I don't have a good answer for you. It's been too long since I added to the version 1 project listing, and the listing isn't really working very well any more, nor is the software in some cases. But you should be able to find a game/software submission site without too much trouble, and then just link to your game from here if you manage to get it uploaded elsewhere.

I've spent time in the past trying to protect my software but in the end it's all for naught because the software is never popular enough to warrant protection anyway. And upon further reflection about what really matters, these sorts of protections basically work against everything I try to accomplish, so I've given up on them. Maybe I'm still naive, but I think you gotta be lucky to have someone interested enough in your work for it to warrant protection, and then it might be worth some effort. But until then, I think it's rarely worth the effort. Until then, we should be doing everything we can to spread and share interest in our work rather than restrict it. See http://iotabuildit.sf.net/ as an example.

Now it's possible that, lacking an element of mystery (see Apple, Inc.), software is *less* interesting, but I don't know enough about marketing to speak on that subject.

Normally I think you can use your email account to reset your password if you forget. The email address associated with your original account is of the form d***y@hooves.mail (which I have obscured for privacy) do you remember it? Do you still have access to that address? Is there another address I should reset it to so you can reset your password with it? I can't use the same address you have on the new account because every email address has to be unique among all users.

On the subject of an interview, I wouldn't mind answering some written questions. I could even manage a Skype interview if you think we can find a time that works for both of us. (I'm free most of today, it looks like. After that most evenings after 6:00 pm CDT are available.)

My project management experience is kind of limited because I'm kind of in between being a developer and a manager at work right now. I'm responsible for tracking others' work, writing up and reviewing designs for others to implement, and reviewing others' code to some extent, but mostly spending time on my own coding (fortunately for me!). I have pretty good visibility into how my own manager spends his time too, though. So if you want answers from me, contact me by email -- bluemonkmn@gmail.com. Sometimes I miss a few days visiting the forums so email is the quickest way to reach me in writing.

I fixed the links. Let me know if you have trouble with this forums private message feature and need another means of contacting me (I think everyone has access to my email address too). I haven't seen anything yet. Oh, but that's because you only just posted that message 10 minutes ago :).

The book is available through retailers now. Amazon has it listed at retail price. Looks like there's another that has it listed at a discounted price via Amazon. There are also other retailers listing it for rental or purchase at discounted prices. You might do better with your own searches on ISBN number 9781516825424. I can order a copy shipped to my address for about $15. If you send me a private message with your address I can tell you how much that would cost, and, if you like, order you a copy. SGDK2 fans on the forum could pay be back with PayPal or Bitcoin. For you, Vincent, I'll pay for your copy since you've made such a great contribution to the community and to the book! If you want multiple copies, let me know, and you can pay me back for the extras at the discounted rate I get from IngramSpark.

That's a good topic for discussion. Right now I have the price set at $48. I'm concerned that it might seem to high to some people. But it's nothing compared to the price of some college textbooks. Of course this is no college textbook. I initially set the price close to $50 because when I set up the book on CreateSpace, a 260-page book with full color and extended distribution (book stores; international availability, etc) could not have a price less than that (somewhere in that range; I can't remember exactly what the price was). I decided to keep the price similar when setting up the book at IngramSpark in case I decided to allow the book to be distributed from both publishers. How does $48 strike you? I can probably get a special price/discount code for some people, but if you didn't know me and had to pay that price, how would you feel about $48?

I'm very glad your game exists! It made a great example in the book of how sophisticated SGDK2 games can be. LOK Revival still stands as the one most spectacular example of what can be accomplished with SGDK2.

I had to switch publishers because CreateSpace apparently cannot print most shades of green so all the green gradients look flat! Hopefully IngramSpark will give me better results. I'm hoping to formally release the book on October 16th.

Edit: http://lokrevival.webs.com/ (and, in fact, all of webs.com) seems inaccessible from here this morning. Is it still available? Hopefully it's just a temporary or internal DNS problem here. When I add this to my system32\drivers\etc\hosts file, the site loads fine:

The first book covering SGDK2 is about to be published with the title of Building Games with Scrolling Game Development Kit 2.
The book isn't quite final yet, but you can get a preview of some significant subset of the content at https://www.createspace.com/Preview/1175307 and provide feedback.
