"Wondering what you think of this idea for a project"

I'm thinking of making a project where the player is a guitarist, and they can improvise and make their own songs.

map f1->f12 as notes, enter/return as picking, (so the player would have to hold one or more frets and pick at same time) recorded from the guitar using a mic, (obviously I'll have to make sure the notes recorded are from the same key or people will get some weird sounding stuff)
let the player muck around with those and have option to record what they play and save as mp3, (or similar non-propriety format) or in-game import-able 'demo' file, which simply saves the keypresses and renders the actual music using the computer the 'demo' is played on, to keep down filesize for those who have the game installed.

have seperate "modes" for different styles, a set of heavy grunge chord set, rock chord set, higher pitched guitar solo set, lighter octave based chords, acoustic chords etc.

I know I would find it a very entertaining game, but that may be because I'm quite musically orientated, was wondering what other people thought of the idea.

Some questions/queries/issues/concerns I would like cleared up.

- whats the typical limit for how many sound files can play at once before it gets a bit laggy? (I want to be able to play at least 3 notes at once)

- How extensive are the sound controls? (Could I edit pitch and speed played at runtime, so I don't have to record too much notes seperately?)

- uhh.. i had more but i forgot.

EDIT:// reading over the post i found the f1-12 and enter/return to pick controls confusing. the keyboard would be held like this, not my idea, was used for the game frets on fire, a guitar hero clone.

EDIT2:// i just realized, why record from a mic when i can plug my guitar directly into my laptop....? that will be better quality...

EDIT3:// but now that i think about it, it will have no effects applied... I will need a cord to run from my amplifier to my laptop... hmmm...

I've just been shown a good file hosting site for those of you who are having issues uploading large files that are too big for box.net and don't know how to use ftp.

It will keep your files forever, unless they're over 5 gigabytes, then they are deleted after a few days.

The site is called - http://www.vipeers.com/
It's an invite only system, so here's an invite code to use on registration - "LIFEHACKER20" (without "quotes")
That invite code is only valid until 10th November, so make sure to sign up before then if you plan on using this service.

What is the MBTI test?
The MBTI, Or Myers-Briggs Type Indicator is a psychometric test developed to define people, Basically.

The test and types were developed by Katherine Cook Briggs and her daughter Isabel Briggs Myers from the 1923 work of Carl Gustav Jung, a Swiss psychiatrist born in 1875.

There are 16 personality types and the theory is that everyone falls into one of them. It can tell you how you are likely to act, How you approach certain situations and life in general and it can also tell you what type of job position is most suited for you.

Where is it used?

The world of business is where MBTI is mostly used. It will often be issued by the employer before you take a job to see if you have got the right personality for what they want you to do. A competent employer won't put a shy follower in a leadership position for example.

I done this test, very skeptical about the result it would give me. (I thought it was like a fortune teller) But basically, in the end, it was if someone had spied on me my whole life, and wrote down every personality trait I possess.... Very accurate, quite interesting to see your result.

I'll give you my result to give you an idea.

Your Type is
INTJ   --    Introverted-Intuitive-Thinking-Judging
Strength of the preferences % 56 88 50 89
You are:

    * moderately expressed introvert
    * very expressed intuitive personality
    * moderately expressed thinking personality
    * very expressed judging personality

Rational Portrait of the Mastermind (INTJ) (apparently im a mastermind.)

My potential jobs are:

Information System Specialist
or Computer Programmer

and my predicted profile is basically a biography of me.

Try the test and post your results! :D

mmmmk... i need help with choosing parts and putting togethor a custom gaming pc.

At the moment I'm picking out parts...

So far I have,

Case --- Antec "Nine Hundred" --- $150
PSU --- Power Supply 825W 12V 2X8CM Fans (Generic) --- $80
Processor --- AMD Phenom 9850 BLACK EDITION (quad core 4mb cache 2.5GHz) --- $288
Sound Card --- Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Gamer --- $119
Wireless internet (mum will be pissed off if I run cords thru the house) --- 54mbps --- $19
Hard Drive --- Western Digital 400GB SATA 7200 rpm --- $79
RAM --- Kingston 4Gb DDR2 800 Memory --- $99
GFX Card --- Nvidia Geforce 9800GTX 512MB --- $330
Monitor --- Benq G2200W-GF 22W inch 5MS D-SUB DVI-D LCD --- $225
DVD Drive --- Asus SATA 20X DRW-2014S1T --- $39

I don't know how to pick a compatible motherboard. (Help please?)
If any of the parts is a bottleneck to other parts, lemme know.
If I have forgotten anything, lemme know.
If one of the parts is s***house, lemme know.
If the parts aren't compatible, lemme know.
If for example the CPU isn't fast enough to bother with such a powerful GFX card, lemme know.
If you need more detail on the parts, visit the links.

thanks in advance.

PS: I already have keyboard+mouse.
PPS: This is all in AUD.

whoa just found this program. and is fantastic for animating. Not as hard/bloated as flash, doesn't force monochrome sprites like pivot, just simple bone animation that works great.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3MHra8CySk8&eurl=http://forum.toribash.com/showthread.php?p=355514
thats my first shot. I lost a bit of my animation skill because I haven't animated in ages... but I will soon regain what I lost in time and be pulling out some nice sprites. :D

This isn't only for sprites, you can add bones to anything, you could get a photo, add bones and make it look like they are talking. xD

http://graphics.smithmicro.com/article/articleview/1913/1/793?sbss=793 <--homepage

unfortunately the program is not free... there is a free version, i think it can't export over a certain amount of frames or something.

so perhaps give it a shot, its a lot less tedious that drawing every frame by hand... and will come out with better results too. :D

Off-Topic / Visual Basic
« on: 2008-03-03, 04:02:20 AM »
since Sunday I have started learning visual basic, using the "Visual Basic Express Edition 2005" software (2008 refuses to work on my comp... something about me not giving it registry access...so i installed 2005! :D) and i gotta say, I love it. So far I have made a few apps... basically they were all test apps and stuff I had to do while following the tutorial, the two I made on my own are attached. A simple web browser, and a calculator. :D  (comments/questions/queries/concerns? XD)

the original sgdk was made with visual basic right? How could you sort through all the code bluemonkmn? lol I was getting a little confused even with just the calculator... did you do it with different projects, like one was the map editor, one was the graphics editor etc to make it easier, and then grouped them togethor?

well the thing i love most about visual basic, is that its visual... and fairly basic... lmao.
its easy to understand, most of the if, do, then, else etc i learned from sgdk2, and the rest was just variables i also learnt from sgdk! sgdk has taught me heaps. :O

...discuss! :D

Projects / Stickmen Sprites...
« on: 2008-01-01, 05:01:21 AM »
I announced a while back, that I was gonna make these sprites... actually I said they would be ready by the official release. But school and everything else, didn't have time unfortunately. Now that I'm in summer holidays, I decided I'd continue working on them.

All the graphics for them are done, it's just the making of the sprites to do now. Sounds simple right? No, not really. I wanted these to be great sprites, so they have a pretty complex rule set. This includes things like decent animation, full running and jumping animation complete so far, with jumping to be done soon. :D
Animation 'Preview': http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=G3aFB1MX6N0
but also, other than animation, it is a pretty complex sprite compared to the fairly simple sprites made in SGDK1. This includes things such as rules to stop you changing direction mid-air, when you jump you actually gain a little speed, if you don't build up speed by running first, your jump won't get very far, etc...

But just today I added a really cool, yet simple feature. You can set the colour of your sprite. And I don't just mean red, green blue, yellow etc. I mean full power over rgb values, in game. This allows you 14526784 different colours. :D  Why in-game you say? well if you wanted to you could easily modify it a little to be done in a menu, like a character select, but I chose to do it in-game, as like a camouflage feature.  :nerd:
Say you wanted green, since you start off black, you need to add more green, to make yourself green. You simply press G+Pageup... If you decide you made him a little too bright, G+Pagedown. If you wanted to make purple, you would go back to black, by holding G+Pagedown until you lost all your green-y-ness, and then add some blue and some red. This is done by pressing B+Pageup, to add blue, then R+Pageup to add some red, this will come out purple. :D
Now earlier I mentioned this could be used for camouflage... it wouldn't work against bot players, as it would take some complex code to do that, but it could work in MULTIPLAYER! Since I'm making 4 sprites I might as well build multiplayer into the sprite rules instead of the map, as much as I can anyway. So you can easily blend into backgrounds, to the point where your the exact same colour as it. This all depends on your knowledge of rgb values, and how good your reflexes are on the pageup/down buttons, it would be a skill, it would take practice. I know I made it sound really hard, but I just gave it a shot now and did pretty well I think. I will post a video to demonstrate soon. (Everyone likes videos!)
Oh and I might as well post the project so far, so you can have a shot at it yourself.   ;)
http://www.box.net/shared/muey3m4g0o

Not sure if I will actually include that with the sprites, seems a little too specific, it would only work for a few projects.
If I don't include it with the sprites I might make it a importable source code thing or something like that, or include it in a game of my own, as I think it's pretty cool. :nerd:

Oh, and any advice on how I can shorten/optimize that rule tree? It's massive...
wow, those .sgdk2 files compress so well! 300kb, with all the graphics and stuff embedded in there... that's fantastic! :D

Projects / Jousting
« on: 2007-11-23, 05:11:22 AM »
always wanted to play a jousting game, haven't seen one before though.

Decided yesterday, I would make one. (summer holidays soon, woot!)

One twist... You ride a motorcycle, not a horse. :o

It would be a game where you simply play against a bot, no stages or seperate maps. (or if I cant get a decent bot working, a player)

Ive seen jousts with and without shields, (most without) but shields would add more depth to the gameplay, so I will implement them.

Im thinking for controls have the arrows on your keyboard move your shield, while w,a,s,d move your lance. (or other way around)
It would be a difficult concept, but I think would be the best method.
Jousting isn't meant to be easy, and if every time you can get your shield and lance perfectly aligned then it would be too easy.

Btw, it would be a top-down camera angle, makes the most sense.

What do you people think? Any ideas that would improve it?

A week ago I got a nintendo wii.
Does anyone else own one?'

I gotta say, it is...awesome, to say the least.
I have Mortal Kombat: Armageddon and Wii Sports.

Mortal Kombat is cool, but barely makes use of the motion sensor in the remote at all... so its not that exciting.
Wii sports is just that much fun, its unbelievable. Especially multiplayer.

Does anyone else own a wii?

If so what games you got?
