Mouse pointer disappears

My mouse pointer disappears whenever it is in motion in fullscreen mode.  It reappears whenever the mouse is still, but that is little consolation.  What could be causing this?

This is a known problem that I haven't been able to work around due to inconsistent DirectX/video drivers.  Some of them did not work correctly with certain kinds of mouse pointers so I had to work around it as best I could, which resulted in this side effect on some video cards (video cards which now seem to be the most popular, including my most recent one).
