Need help building a pc.
« on: 2008-06-06, 10:43:27 PM »
mmmmk... i need help with choosing parts and putting togethor a custom gaming pc.

At the moment I'm picking out parts...

So far I have,

Case --- Antec "Nine Hundred" --- $150
PSU --- Power Supply 825W 12V 2X8CM Fans (Generic) --- $80
Processor --- AMD Phenom 9850 BLACK EDITION (quad core 4mb cache 2.5GHz) --- $288
Sound Card --- Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Gamer --- $119
Wireless internet (mum will be pissed off if I run cords thru the house) --- 54mbps --- $19
Hard Drive --- Western Digital 400GB SATA 7200 rpm --- $79
RAM --- Kingston 4Gb DDR2 800 Memory --- $99
GFX Card --- Nvidia Geforce 9800GTX 512MB --- $330
Monitor --- Benq G2200W-GF 22W inch 5MS D-SUB DVI-D LCD --- $225
DVD Drive --- Asus SATA 20X DRW-2014S1T --- $39

I don't know how to pick a compatible motherboard. (Help please?)
If any of the parts is a bottleneck to other parts, lemme know.
If I have forgotten anything, lemme know.
If one of the parts is s***house, lemme know.
If the parts aren't compatible, lemme know.
If for example the CPU isn't fast enough to bother with such a powerful GFX card, lemme know.
If you need more detail on the parts, visit the links.

thanks in advance.

PS: I already have keyboard+mouse.
PPS: This is all in AUD.

decided on this processor instead.  CPU --- Intel DUO E8400 3.0GHz

and from what I hear on other forums, this is a good choice of motherboard for the parts i have chosen.
nVIDIA NF750i SLI FSB 1.33GHz DDR2-800 EPU

Opinions on that?

you might also want an operating system in that list too. you computers not going to do any thing without one (a year ago i would have suggested ms dos 6, but now i hear that's been outdated for more than a decade :))

for a gaming PC like you want, i would suggest Windows Vista Home or Professional edition. although its interface is slower ( >:(from what i hear) the gaming power is greater than Xp's

Looking to the skies.....

i have vista OEM. i have used both vista and xp on computers often, vista is better for games, (better fps) xp is better for getting work done. (prog's open faster, ui is faster)

Why are you building your own computer?  It seems like, in the end, it would be more expensive and risky than buying a pre-built one with a warranty and support plan.  Have you tried, for example, assembling a Dell with the components you want (on their web site)?  Then you don't have to worry about compatibility of the parts because they ensure that you have chosen an optimal configuration.  And I think the cost of building your own these days doesn't get you much savings, and might even cost you more.  Don't take my word for it, though.  I've never been much of a hardware guy.

pre-made pc's are a massive rip-off in Australia. Try comparing the American dell sites prices to the Australian one. :/  Australia sometimes gets as much as double the cost. If we had comparable prices to yours, I would buy a premade one, but since it's such a rip off, I can save around 500-1000 dolllars by making it myself. :/

In that case, would it be possible to configure a PC on Dell's site, so you know it's a valid configuration, then look for the components individually to build it yourself?
