Fundry.com allows people to target donations to a project toward funding specific features.  It looks interesting, but I wonder how popular this would be among users.  There do seem to be a lot of fees invovled, but if it's really valuable that won't matter.  Do SGDK2 users feel like they would want to pay to get their pet features into SGDK2?  Probably not when I'm putting them in for free right now :).  Don't worry, I won't stop giving away SGDK2 enhancements for free.  But if there's some feature that has been taking too long to get in, maybe the incentive to finish one feature sooner would be worth something?  I'm not quite sure how I feel about the idea... I could probably be persuaded one way or ther other.

Who would say no to someone who pays you to work on your own project *dreaming*...

Yes, it sounds like a dream, but I wonder how realistic it is.  Would people actually be *willing* to pay.  If not so much, then there are some down-sides to think about:
1. When people pay they expect you to deliver.  I think this plan allows them to pledge without fully paying until the delivery is done, so hopefully it's not such a problem.  But even if people make pledges, they will have more expectation of having deliveries.  If the pledges are so small that I would rather do something else, people might just get annoyed at the whole SGDK2 project.
2. What if they want features that I don't think should be part of the project or don't want to work on or don't know how to work on (3-D for example)?  (I guess I'm not sure if the features are features that I approve before people pledge to them or not.)
3. It could be more of a distraction than an excitement if I get only small and rare contributions.  It would be easier to just implement the features when it's convenient, and do releases on my own schedule, rather than add the extra complications for so little benefit.
4. If there are not enough people to confirm that a feature was implemented to users' satisfaction (allowing the pledge to be paid), what happens?

So this is why I would be interested to know how popular it would be before getting into it.  I think it would be fun to work on SGDK2 full time, but I feel like that's only a dream.

Yeah, those are good points.  Even since I heard about the Minecraft success story, I'm uber-jealous.  To think he started his projects month after me and yet...  Oh well, I don't want to go there.  :P

I gotta think of something...

But anyway, if someone deserves to make a living with his own project, it's got to be you bluemonkmn!  It's too bad SGDK2 isn't more popular.  I made as much positive advertising I dared to with my project release, but I doubt it generated much interest...  Which is only natural since my game doesn't attract as much attention as I would like.

I'm afraid people dream in 3D nowadays.

Your project hasn't reached its peak yet, though, has it?  It's still in beta.  When it's done, it can be listed in the project listing and on game/software listing sites and then many more people will get it.  Are you really nervous about making it too public?  If so I/we should look for other examples of fan games -- I suspect we could find examples that would indicate your game is safe, especially since the original series has dissolved.

Yeah, it's in beta, but I expected more people to try it and give me feedback.  I'm gonna release the final version in February but I'm afraid there will still be glitches and bugs because it wasn't very thoroughly tested.  Oh well, I'll make a final version #2 if it's very tragic. :P

Nah, I'm not nervous about making it public anymore.  It can't be stopped at this stage. hehe! :)

Sometimes it takes a while for software to spread... not like the rocket-to-the-top super success stories in the news.  But once you have this product done, you have *something* that you can share wherever and whenever you want.  Accumulate that sharing over a long time and eventually you'll have a lot of players.  You will have shared it on many sites and have a lot of publicity.  Then who knows what's next.  Maybe some publisher will contact you to include it in a free games collection like they did with Rolly the Purple Ball... not so likely with the copyrighted material in it, but maybe the original copyright holders will like it and do something with it :).

It makes sense.  I had a feeling I had to share and distribute my game fast since the game world evolves so fast...  But it's irrelevant since my game ain't exactly at the peak of technology hehe!  Even if it takes a while, it will spread eventually.

Thanks bluemonkmn! :)
