burning CD's
« on: 2005-12-15, 10:03:57 PM »
I have been trying to burn music onto a CD-R to listen to on my walkman.  CD-RW's will burn, but don't play on my old walkman. The CD-Rs i have don't seem to work.  The pc i'm using has a drive fully capible of burning CD-Rs, though.  The only thing i can think of that could have done this is i updated Windows media player. (driver issue???) The same CD-Rs worked before....

How specifically does it fail?  Does it not think there's a blank CD in the drive? Or does it burn and then just turn out to not be a good disc?

cdrw's generally have less light reflection than cd-r's, and cdr's have less reflection than stamped cd's.  Many older players have trouble reading cd-rs, let alone cdrw's.  If it can be read with cdr, then thats great use those, there only what $0.05 a pop nowadays.  If you need cdrw's you could try a different brand name.  Im not sure what is the best to try.

if its an older player, maybe the lense needs cleaning.  Which I personally have never done, so my knowledge stops there.

I think the problem he's having is burning onto CD-Rs, not playing them (which may eventually also be a problem)

WHOA lots of ideas!

When i try to burn, it says there's a CD and will start to burn, but then, after almost compleated, it will say something about how there was an error and to try another disk.  They have always worked before!

and yes, my cd player does play CD-R's.

About actually playing it... should any cd player be able to play any cd (R, RW) ? I've heard mixed opinions...

Short answer: no.  Newer ones all probably do and most of the ones you buy today will say "plays CD-R/RW" or something like that.  The older CD players, however, some times do not play CD-Rs.

If the error occurs when burning the last song (rather than when closing the disc after the last song is done burning) then try burning the CD without that last song on it.  It may just be a bad file or bad conversion or some other oddity.  If the error occurs when closing the disc, then the problem is more broad, and I wouldn't know where to go without actually taking a look at the computer.  Maybe somebody else does...
