what is sgdk 2 and where do i get it?

SGDK2 is Scrolling Game Development Kit version 2.0.  It's not done yet.  You can read about some of the things it can do in the SGDK2 topics here and in the Announcements forum.  You can see a pre-release demo of some of the features at http://sgdk2.sf.net/ but keep in mind, that is not finished software.  I'd estimate only about 60% of the features are there.

sgdk 2 has about a million more features and nicer working environment. (according to what Ive seen of the pre alpha releases)

I wonder if you've ever heard of a product called Duke Nukem Forever?

Not to say that SGDK2 is vaporware, but rather, to say that it will come out "when it's ready" and that's all.  Giving a date or even a ballpark may lead to dissapointment.

That said, BlueMonk has said (once) that it's about 60% done.  This was awhile ago though, and it maybe more.

Usually I post my progress in the SGDK2 status thread in the News and Announcements area.  I think information about most of the significant features that I have completed recently has been posted there.  I just finished support for sound, and some functions that allow loading and saving games.  I can't call this officially supported yet because something I do in the near future could still change the file format and make it incompatible with older projects, but there is a pre-alpha version posted (before sound support and save game support was added) that you can play around with.  Check out the SGDK2 threads in the News and Announcements section.  Just keep in mind pre-alpha means it's still under development adding new features, and I haven't even gone all the way through to start focusing on testing it yet.  But I myself do find it usable and have been working with a little test project that demonstrates a few cool features.
