Say someone gets shot, instead of having to draw frames to make a falling sprite, it uses actual phisics to determine how they fall. ex it wouldn't look realistic when not using phisics while falling down stairs. Or if they fell onto a table, phisics would make it look much better. It also is better because it's not always the same. It can be used to simulate the impact on the body when landing from a fall. Not so many graphics have to be drawn when using a ragdoll. Have a look at Counter-Strike Source if you have it. When they die ragdoll phisics are used. Or any motorbike game, falling off the motorbike should be done with ragdolls to make it look realistic.

Well, deaths are the most noticeable places where ragdoll physics shows up, but any IK-wired objects can used ragdoll physics.  Basically, it's what happens when a force acts on an object with moving parts and those moving parts aren't controlled by some other, stronger counter-force.  For example, a human has control of their own limbs until they die, at which time only external forces act upon their bodies, causing them to act like, as the name suggests, ragdolls, rolling around and reacting to forces (such as bullets or gravity) accordingly.  However, a piece of cloth, or even some types of liquid or breaking glass can be executed with something similar to ragdoll physics as well.  It wouldn't exactly be the same, of course, because it's not a ragdoll (not a person-shaped thing).  But you get the idea.

I think "Destroy All Humans" exhibited a lot of this.  Maybe I should play it again and see what it's like on my PS3 :).

caligari truespace 3.2 is ragdoll physics and you can SORT OF make games in it... (oh... and its free)

Have u got a PS3? Nice. I don't think they've come out in Australia yet.

Yeah, lots of people may consider it a silly move because Blu-Ray and HD-DVD are still at it and the PS3 is overpriced for a console, but:
1) My PS2 was one of the original batch and still had the flaw that made it not play DVDs and some games very well (had to try dozens of times to get them to work).  (Apparently many people were able to send their systems in for free repairs, but mine worked well enough that I never bothered.)  So I wanted something new that could play all my PlayStation and PlayStation 2 games.
2) I wanted something that could play DVDs
3) I like the idea of getting a Blu-Ray player below cost (PS3 is one of the cheapest if not the cheapest Blu-Ray player available because game systems are generally sold at a loss because of the profit that will be made on the system's games).
4) I had a gift card from work for my 10 year service anniversary that covered the whole cost of a PS3 and then some, so it didn't feel like it was really coming out of my pocket anyway.
Oh yeah and:
5) Durnurd gave me "permission" to get one when he discovered that there was a new Lemmings game available for it.

Some extra bonuses I got that I wasn't expecting:
1) I really like the ability to download game demos for free over wireless internet.  I used to wait years for demo discs on the PS2... they came so rarely.
2) Slots for camera memory cards
3) Ability to browse the web and watch videos over the internet from the PS3 (my computer isn't near the room where the projector is like the PS3 is).
4) Forgot about how cool the wireless controller would be... the old one barely reached where I wanted to sit.  The new one works great, and recharges when it's plugged in to the USB cable.

Thats sorta similar to the PSP you can download demos and stuff but I have a small memory card so I don't do it often. Ya know you can use a PSP as a PS3 controller? That's pretty cool.

I believe there's also a slot for a PSP memory card, possibly the same slot. Because I've heard of people backing up their PSP data on a PS3.
