Well, the game has never been tested on a virtual machine, so errors are not surprising.  If you can get the DirectX information, it would probably help diagnose the problem.

In the virtual machine, goto Start->Run and type "dxdiag" and click OK.  Find the "DirectX Version" label and let us know what version you have.  Also, click on the "Display" tab at the top and let us know what's in the "Device" and "Driver" boxes.  Taking a screenshot would probably be easiest.

The virtual machine does not emulate the hardware you have on your system, it emulates its own specific set of hardware that it knows how to work with, and that includes a rather low-end video card apparently.  There may be a way to change that, but I have never worked with VMWare, so I don't know.

You may be able to play the game full-screen, but this is not helpful if you want to actually edit games, since this error is the same when editing maps and playing games.  If you want to try playing full-screen anyway, right-click on the project (top-level) object in the tree, select Edit, then change Windowed to false, and see if it runs.

Edit: After a cursory search on the web, it looks like VMWare doesn't support current versions DirectX generally, so there's little hope there.

As far as SGDK2 compatibility, I think (hope!) that the choice of Vista or XP doesn't make a difference.  I'm reasonably certain that there are Vista users that are working OK with SGDK2.  And I use XP myself, so I know that works.  I know it doesn't work on Virtual PC on the same machine, though.

vista is fine as long as you know how to configure the bits you don't like.

You'll need to install .NET 1.1 if you get Vista, since it comes with 2.0 and not 1.1, which is what the current version is built on.

There are so many reasons, it's hard to list them all, but the documentation does list a number of improvements in version 2:

i knew i had a computer left here in this house (Pentium III)

so i am thinking of upgrading its graphics card instead of buying another laptop (saves me alot of room too)

Here are the specifications of the computer:

Pentium 3 866 mhz
512 MB Ram
Windows XP
Graphics Card onboard (doesnt work with TSGDK 2)

I have been looking around and i can see a geforce 5200 PCI (sorry only pci will fit into the pc) for 15 bucks. or i can buy a brand new graphics card which will cost 40 bucks and i will get a geforce 6200!. Only problem is that it is out of stock at my local hardware dealer.

What do you guys think? Are these specs enough?

512 MB of RAM is what I run with, and I don't think the 866 MHz will be a problem unless you plan on creating lots of small tiles (SGDK2 runs rather slowly when drawing lots of small tiles in the frameset editor or any other frame browser because that part doesn't use DirectX).  The video card you get just needs to be up to par with DirectX 9 drivers, and I still don't have a complete list of which video cards work and which don't.  But the memory and processor in your system should be adequate.  When you find out how it performs, let us know so others can know what to expect out of SGDK2 performance on lower end systems.

the geforce 6200 is in the list for the supported video cards. and the 5200 FX also.
