Game runs extremly slow
« on: 2005-07-13, 01:14:36 PM »
I downloaded some of the games off your site (Dark Elf, Haunted Childhood, Rolly...) and they were all working fine.
Then, I had to reinstall my windows cos I had a viruses and all other crapfest. I reinstalled Windows (completely), put all I needed (drivers, direct X) and I've installed BitDefender 8 Professional Plus - security pack. Then, after a while, I tried running your games. They all runned extremly slow, for instance, in Haunted Childhood, the character would move extremly slow, everything was really slow. Same thing with Rolly and others. It's so slow, it's unplayable.
So, what could it be? Perhaps Bitdefender slows my computer so bad? Has anyone experienced something similar?
I've got Athlon 1800 XP, 512 MB RAM, Geforce 4 64 MB.
Thx in advance

I have experienced similar things due to a malfunctioning sound card.  If you try either removing all sounds from a project or using a different sound device, that may help.  If you have Windows XP, just open the Task Manager, and choose the performance tab.  If it shows your CPU usage at a high value when not playing SGDK, then something is taking up a lot of CPU cycles.  Clicking on the Processes tab, you can see what's taking up CPU cycles.  Most of it should be the System Idle Process.  If not, then some other program is slowing you down.

Yeah, I checked the process in the task manager. When I don't run anything, CPU usage is about 1 or 2%, but while running some of those games, it jumps up to 100%. I haven't tried what your sound card suggestion yet, I'll check that out.
I did notice, some of my other games are running slow as well. But I'm sure those weren't sound related.

nope, disabling sounds didn't help.
It seems that only 2d windows games run slowly, while 3d games run normal. I tried warcraft 3, gta san andreas, quake 2 and they all run flawlesly.
But then again, I also tried q2 without 3d acceleration, and it worked fine.
I tried few game maker & gamedev games, not good.

It's all good now, apparently my video graphics drivers weren't good, so I downloaded the newest NVIDIA drivers, now everything works perfectly.
Thanks for the tips.
btw, the poster above was me, obviously ;)
