Apparently, you can add alot of notation, but it won't actually play it. You can have the program draw crescendos every which way, but it'll only draw them on the sheet...
I recall seeing a full version or something on the website for it a while ago, which allows you to print off your sheets, so you would have to be able to add a lot of notation for playing in real life. For most notations you can add you can easily do anyway by right clicking the note and choosing properties.

hey anvil studios is cool, but how do i make a note hold and go up and down at the same time? isnt that called a cresendo and a decresendo? i shouldve payed attention in music class!  :-\

Don't worry about cresendos and and all the crazy band vocabulary.  Just put notes on the page and try to get little melody riffs you like, for now.  You can also open a favorite midi (.mid) song in anvil and see what its author did.  One major thing I got really confused about was the "grand piano" set to "channel 10", which is basically percussion/drums, but you can time them better than Anvil's "rythm" thing, though using the channel 10 thing takes guessing to figure out what note is what percussion instrament...but anyway, this is really long already, so I think I'll stop... but good luck and have fun!

http://www.modplug.com/ (for tracker music)
http://musescore.org/ (For standard midi notation/scores)

BBBut, for a more modern approach there is either Temper (Formerly Payware, now free: http://www.angryredplanet.com/temper/download.html ) or Reaper ($60 for basically a $200 program) combined with all the free vst instruments, sounds and effects you could ever dream of here: http://www.kvraudio.com/plugin-ranks.php

Now you know what I've been up to for the last half-decade :)

Oh and to run the last two (Temper/Reaper) you'll probably need these ASIO soundcard drivers: http://www.asio4all.com/

Free as well.
